Two-dimensional gold nanoparticle array was fabricated in this study by using an octadecylamine monolayer at the interface of air/HAuCl4 solution as the template. The monolayer template was associated with the gold precursor AuCl4- in the subphase, and then was transferred onto a solid substrate to form a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film by the LB deposition technique. A gold nanoparticle array was thus formed from the LB film by UV reduction. Characteristics of the monolayer template were studied from its isotherm behavior at the interface. The factors affecting the formation of gold nanoparticles in the LB film were then elucidated by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The results demonstrated that by changing the HAuCl4 concentration in the subphase, one could control the adsorption behavior of the gold precursor onto an octadecylamine monolayer template. Moreover, from the AFM and TEM analysis, it was found that the LB film morphology after UV reduction could change from gold nanoparticle layer to gold nano-thin film, depending on the adsorbed density of the precursor on the monolayer template. As a result, by controlling the adsorption amount of gold precursor on the monolayer, one can reach the goal of manipulating the morphology of a gold nanoparticle layer on the substrate. However, with the same HAuCl4 concentration in the subphase, the distribution and size of gold nanoparticles formed in the LB film of precursor/monolayer template were affected by UV reduction time. The longer the photoreduction time is, the larger and more inhomogeneous the nanoparticles are. One can thus control the morphology of a gold nanoparticle array by adjusting the UV irradiation time.
