Reverse engineering is getting more and more important in product design. Owing to the variety of the shape design and the need for increasing the quality of the product, the development of reverse engineering technology has recently been improved substantially. The resolution of current optical scanning device has been enhanced considerably, resulting in the improvement of the accuracy and precision on the scanned data, and hence the accuracy of the surface reconstruction process and the quality of the manufacturing process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the development of reverse engineering technology and to study its application in sport shoes industry. Reverse engineering technology is primarily employed for triangular meshes preprocessing and CAD model reconstruction in this study. Specific applications of the proposed technology in sport shoes industry are described, which primarily improves the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing process. An industrial example for the design and manufacturing of die casting molds for the sport shoes industry is presented and its results are discussed.
