This thesis discusses the composition Eight Pieces for Four Timpani by the American composer Elliott Carter and analyzes its interpretation. Moreover, it deals with the application of timpani skills and the timbre change of musical notation.
The thesis consists of five chapters: The first chapter is the research motive and methodology. The second chapter is the introduction to Eight Pieces for Four Timpan, which concludes composer's biography, composing technique, introduction of the eight pieces and the musical notation synopsis of the work. The third chapter is the analysis of Eight Pieces for Four Timpani mainly by the music structure and paragraph analysis; furthermore, it discusses the interval, material, motive and tempo change. The fourth chapter is the interpretation of Eight Pieces for Four Timpani, which is subdivided into phrases to probe into the practice and performance methods. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.
It is hoped for that the thesis is able to make performers further understand the connotation and performing techniques of Elliott Carter's composition. Also it may serve as a catalyst that facilitates more researchers to get involved in the works and performance of timpani.
