Social isolation in older adults adversely affects their physical and mental health, thereby reducing their quality of life. Social isolation is a state of limited social interaction and interpersonal relationships. Physical or emotional isolation may be caused by physiological, psychological, social, or environmental factors. The Lubben Social Network Scale and Friendship Scale are commonly used to assess social isolation in older adults. In addition, the Social Isolation Scale has been recently introduced to assess social isolation. Interventions for social isolation in older adults focus on enhancing social interaction. Moreover, they promote physical and mental comfort and provide instrumental support and home and community care. The quality of care regarding the social dimensions of comprehensive care for older adults can be improved if healthcare personnel can recognize risk factors of social isolation through effective strategies, use appropriate assessment tools to identify social isolation problems, and implement intervention measures to address the problems.
