Anxiety is a common symptom of patients with cancer, and the effects of chemotherapy frequently exacerbate it. This study assessed the effects of music therapy on anxiety in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The study adopted a prospective experimental design and recruited patients receiving chemotherapy at a medical center in southern Taiwan. Random sampling was used to recruit 30 individuals for the experimental group and 28 for the control group. The experimental group received 30-minute music therapy sessions in addition to conventional care, whereas the control group received conventional care alone. Anxiety was assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State Anxiety, the Visual Analog Scale, and physiological measurements. SPSS for Windows 22.0 was used to calculate descriptive statistics, verify chi-square results, complete independent sample t tests and paired sample t tests, and conduct analysis of covariance. The results of analysis revealed that the experimental group significantly differed (p> .05) with respect to their scores on the Situational Anxiety Scale (p< .001) and the Visual Analog Scale (p= .004); however, no differences were observed in the control group (p> .05). In addition, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, and blood oxygen concentration. Furthermore, the results revealed that the experimental group experienced a significant overall reduction in anxiety, indicating that when patients with cancer receive chemotherapy, music therapy effectively reduces anxiety. These findings can serve as a reference for improving anxiety in patients treated with chemotherapy and increasing the quality of nursing care.
