On the Orbitally Anisotropic Exchange Interaction

A simple derivation of the orbitally anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian between magnetic ions is presented by linking the matrix elements of the creation-annihilation operators to those of the spherical harmonic operator equivalents. The validity of this Hamiltonian is discussed. The importance of orbital terms in the exchange in comparison with the conventional isotropic term is also discussed, especially in the case of dilute rare-earth alloys.
