The history of experimental (little)theatre in People Republic of China has begun twenty years ago when Gao Xingjian's play, Warning Signal took place in North Theatre in Beijing. The political barrier obstructs the intercommunion in experimental theatre between two places. What has the little theatre in China experienced in these years? What kind of new theatrical form did they obtain? How is their environment of creative working in theatre? Where will they find possibilities in a social-economically rapidly developing society? These questions keep arousing our curiosity about the condition in experimental theatre in China. Such a curiosity resulted in the academic conference-Beyond and Dialogue: Academic Conference of Experimental Theatre in Taiwan and China-held by National Taipei University of Arts in November, 2003. This article will inspect, through the observation gained in the conference, the viewpoints and methods, used by the scholars from both places in their studies of little theatre.
