The Suppressed Publications had long existed before the 1950s. However, the book-ban of the 1950s deserves close examination because it was the first decade after the national government moved to Taiwan. The KMT found that one of the causes leading to the failure of the fight against the communists was the policy regarding literary and artistic work. It was then decided to start book-ban to control the thinking of the people-not only were the books on communism banned but those which echoed similar ideas and whose authors stayed in communist region. This paper uses the Catalogue of Banned Books published by Taiwan Garrison Command and Provincial Government in 1982. The catalogue includes the books banned between 1951and 1982, but this article only examined those banned between 1951 and 1959 to determine the common characteristics of the books. In order to look into this topic, the paper has to describe the books popular at that time, to understand why some books were banned, and by which department. In addition, what were the effects of banning books. When the authors labeled as communists equals to communist writing, what were the effect on publication and reading in Taiwan?
