AIDS-associated Primary Nasopharyngeal Kaposi Sarcoma-Case Report

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated malignancy, mainly affects the skin on the lower extremities and rarely in the mucosa of head and neck. The KS of the head and neck region usually involves the oral cavity, nasal cavity, oropharynx and conjunctiva but it can also be found in pharynx or larynx. However, the nasopharynx is extremely rare, as only a few cases has been previously reported in the literature. We presented a rare case of primary Kaposi sarcoma arising from the nasopharynx in a 33-year-old AIDS man, who presented with frequent blood-tinged sputum and nasal obstruction. Thereafter the patient was successfully managed with low-dose radiotherapy and highly active antiretroviral therapy without recurrence during the 1.5-year follow up period.
