This study explores the usability issues lied in the elders' use of tablet PCs. Ten senior citizens aged from 65 years old and above were recruited and observed about their performance of using tablet PCs in general, and text input and reading in specific. Eight tasks are assigned to the elder users to finish by using two Apps (Memo and e-Newspaper). The findings of the preliminary user experiments suggested that the current icons of each App were difficult for the elders to identify; yet they would try each App until the correct one was hit. The elder users considered using iPad to read newspaper is easy, and they valued the function of enlarging fonts. All participants appreciated and gave high appraisal to the handwriting input, and they could operate smoothly on their own. In spite of the high degree of acceptance the elder users possessed toward using tablet PCs to read, the users in general were lack of sufficient knowledge and experience to understand the hierarchical structure of the functions, and got lost easily while with cascade menu. It is suggested that the learnability of the interface, instead of the functionality of the system, would be of greater concern for the elder users while using tablet PCs.
