Dai Jun-ren(1901-1978) is known as a representative scholar who created rich legacy of Chinese classical academy and thought. As to Dai's life and intellectual relationship, the key source is the Academic Chronicle of Dai Jun-ren (Jing-shan) compiled by his disciple Ruan Ting-yu, but it could be supplemented by more various materials to deepen the details of narrative and explanation, especially the early stage. To achieve the goal, this article will focus on the investigation of the Dai's early activities and demonstrate that Xu Shouchang played a critical role in Dai's life through the chronicle, diary and letters of Xu and so on. This study will shed light on the interaction between these two until the early 1950s and discuss Dai's contacts with Qian Xuan-tong and career in the Peking period of Fu Jen Catholic University and thereafter. Besides, it will also provide several lost articles, including one complementary explanation about Zhuangzi co-authored with Fan Wen-lan. Although the emphasis would merely put on Dai's early stage, by delving into the neglected details and papers, this article will help to broaden the understanding of Dai’s and other scholars' academic life and their situations and choices from Mainland China in the mid of 1930s to Taiwan in the early 1950s.
