The association between urine analysis and night shift work, under the COVID-19 outbreak

Background and Aims: COVID-19 Pandemic has made everyone encounter the immobilization and physical inactivity due to sustained quarantine and social distancing. The aim of this study was to make an analysis from continuous 2 years annual health check data of the employees in a Northern Taiwan company, to evaluate the associations between night shift work and concerning effects change on urine analysis. Methods: A total 5283 day-shift workers and 4039 non-shift workers were recruited separately in 2019; 4329 day-shift workers and 3957 non-shift workers were recruited separately in 2020. The objective of the study is the positive rate of abnormal urine analysis. Results: In 2019, the abnormal rate of urine protein in night workers was 4.5% and the abnormal rate of urine occult blood was 8.6%; in 2020, the abnormal rate of urine protein in night workers was 4.4% and the abnormal rate of urine occult blood was 9.5%. In 2019, the abnormal rate of urine protein in daytime workers was 7.3%, and the abnormal rate of urine occult blood was 10.5%; in 2020, the abnormal rate of urine protein in daytime workers was 4.4%, and the abnormal rate of urine occult blood was 9.5%. Conclusion: Our study Studies have shown that compared with 2019, the positive rate of urine protein or urine occult blood is lower in 2020 than in 2019. It might because of the COVID-19 epidemic pandemic, most people aware to drink more water, which may causing result in the urine test results to become normal. In addition, due to the epidemic pandemic, changes in life and work patterns, diversion, work at home, reduced exercise... etc., reduced the opportunities for the proteinuria are a new discovery during the COVID-19 epidemic pandemic.
