How Helpful is College Education in Developing Students' Competencies? An Evaluation by College Graduates

摘要

本文的目的在於運用清華大學高等研究中心有關『九十二學年度畢業生問卷調查』資料，針對四大類型學校及六大學科類別，分別探討台灣之大學畢業生主觀認為學校對於其發展諸項能力是否有所助益。本文將各類型學校分為四類：公立大學、公立技職、私立大學、私立技職等；在科系分類上，則歸類為六種：人文藝術、教育家政、社科法商、自然資電、工程科技、醫藥農牧等。由此兩類別之畢業生中，分別針對大學所習得之八項能力表示是否有所助益，此八項能力分別為；一、外語能力，二、寫作表達，三、自然科學，四、人文素養，五、自我人際，六、性別識能，七、專業智能，八、公共領域。結果顯示，除專業能力較受肯定以及自我人際及自然科學兩項尚可外，其他皆不如人意。此結果與運用相同資料庫所做的教師意見及大三學生意見之統計分析大致相符，顯見國內大學之教育目標與任務仍需大力提振及落實。

Using data from the 2003 college graduates survey of the Higher Education Database, this study investigates students' evaluation of college education's contribution to competencies development. The eight competencies under evaluation are those in: foreign language comprehension, writing and expression, natural sciences, humanities, interpersonal interaction, gender competency, professional competency, and public affairs. Results show that college graduates are generally dissatisfied with college education in developing these competences, except for professional, interpersonal and natural sciences competencies. Comparisons of students' evaluation of college education are made between public and private, comprehensive and technical universities, as well as among different fields of studies. The implications of these results in college education improvement are discussed.
