The purpose of this study was to investigate faculty and student perceptions of the influence of instructor, student, and course characteristics on student ratings. The sample consisted of 857 faculty members and 1809 students from twenty universities/colleges. The instrument, named Perceptions of the Influence of Background Variables in Student Ratings, was used to measure faculty members and students' perceptions of the influence of background variables on student ratings. This study demonstrates that faculty and students do indeed view an instructor's grading standards, sense of humor, attire, students' prior interest in subjects, and course difficulty as the most influential variables in student ratings. The results of this study also suggest that faculty and students showed small but statistically significant differences between their perceptions. Faculty members are more apt than students to believe that student ratings could be either positively or negatively affected by background variables.
