This study examines the formation and influence of the power structure in schools from the viewpoints of new institutionalism. To achieve the research goals, a large-scale junior high school is chosen as the case study and systematically analyzed through four aspects: context, the strategic actions of the actors, the shapes of the power structure, and the influence of the power structure. The research findings are as follows: (1) The power from formal institutions can be used by teachers in a large-scale school more easily; (2) Actors apply strategic actions to achieve their goals within general formal institutions; (3) The shape of the school power structure is the result of repeated interactions among actors; (4) The shape of the school power structure influences actors' strategic actions and the institutional environment; and (5) The influence of the school power structure on teachers is less coercive due to the large size of the school. Suggestions for school leaders and teachers are proposed according to the research findings.
