This investigation aims to identify the important dimensions of the safety climate in four categories of manufacturing industries in Central Taiwan, and to assess the role of organizational and individual factors in influencing differences in the safety climate. Exploratory factor analysis of the safety climate scale found that four influences were more important than any others, namely commitment and action from management, commitment and action from upper management, perceived risk, and safety practices. The variance for each influence on safety climate was 26.07%, 18.02%, 13.11%, and 6.15% respectively. Consequently, differences in these four factors explained 63.35% of the total variance in safety climate. Furthermore, the internal consistency of each sub-scale reached a Cronbach α value of .9665, .9313, .9195, and .7670 respectively, and the total scale reached a Cronbachαvalue of .9686. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among employees in the wood and bamboo products manufacturing, furniture and fixtures manufacturing, fabricated metal products manufacturing, and basic metal industries in Central Taiwan in 2000. The number of respondents was 524. Significant differences were found in the safety climate between various staffing safety managers. And significant differences were found among individuals with different sexes, ages, levels of seniority, accident experiences, and safety training experiences.
