Application of Smart Wearable Devices in Promoting Physical Activity and Preventing Sarcopenia in Older Adults

Sarcopenia in older adults is a significant global issue today. It is primarily characterized by the gradual reduction of muscle mass and strength, leading to a decline in physical function. This article aims to explore the behavioral risk factors for sarcopenia, the importance of physical activity in its prevention, and the potential of smart wearable devices to promote physical activity and prevent sarcopenia through a literature review. The results indicate that a lack of physical activity and prolonged sedentary behavior are significant risk factors for sarcopenia, potentially leading to reduced muscle protein synthesis, and subsequent loss of muscle mass and strength. Older adults can be encouraged to engage in regular exercise and achieve sufficient physical activity through behavioral change intervention strategies. With the rise of mHealth, the accessibility and affordability of smart wearable devices have increased, leading to their growing acceptance and use among older adults. These devices can accurately monitor physical activity and health data, providing real-time feedback and reminders. This enhances the self-awareness and self-efficacy of older adults, helping them build and maintain healthy and active lifestyles. Smart wearable devices are expected to become a key opportunity for behavioral change interventions for older adults by increasing daily physical activity and reducing sedentary time, thereby achieving the health-promoting goals of preventing and delaying the progression of sarcopenia.
