It is evident that the elderly population in Taiwan has increased rapidly. Health care for the elderly has become a major concern of society. In addition, health-related problems have multiple influences on elderly persons' lives. Therefore, the core goal of the health care system should be providing necessary health care for the elderly to help them achieve their best health state. Nevertheless, there still is little agreement on the definition of health as a concept. The purpose of this article is to explore the definition of health and the health conceptions of Chinese people. As a result of reviewing literature, the writer believes it indicates health is a multi-dimensional concept. In addition, Chinese people hold to different health conceptions from western peoples. This article then provides three suggestions for health care of the elderly. The author hopes understanding about these issues can facilitate communication among health care personnel, as well as between health care personnel and the elderly, and can foster goal-setting for the health care of elderly persons.
