Objective: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common and disaster-related mental illness. Along with the development of non-pharmacological treatments, psychotherapy has also received additional attention, among which emotional freedom technique (EFT) has been successively investigated and discussed. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review and searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Airiti Library for relevant literature published before April 14, 2023. Literature was screened for eligibility, and the duplicates were excluded. Finally, eleven articles were included for review and appraisal. Results: Among the included articles, the quality of eight articles was average, and the quality of the other three articles was poor. All the included articles showed that EFT was beneficial for the treatment of PTSD, and the efficacy reached statistical significance by comparing the pre-test and post-test of the symptom assessment scale, indicating effective improvement of the PTSD symptoms. In addition, EFT also helped to improve physiological values and enhance positive emotions. Conclusion: EFT can help treat PTSD in veterans, adolescents, or the public. However, there is limited literature regarding the application of EFT in treating PTSD in Asian populations, and it is worthy of further study.
