Purpose: This study adopted the means-end chain to explore values of mountain activities through means-end approach; to compare participants' perceived attributes, immediate consequences, and experiential values between two activities of mountaineering and hiking; and to establish Attribute-Consequence-Values chains of these two activities. Methods: Telephone interviews were conducted to solicit information from Yangmingshan National Park hikers and Shei-Pa National Park mountaineers. Results: The results showed that both mountaineers and hikers emphasized terminal values including self-actualization, good life, health and social support. Besides, mountaineers also emphasized environmental ethics as an important value. Pursuing these values, all participants regarded natural landscape, trail characteristics, weather, social activity, and physical activity as important attributes of mountaineering and hiking. Conclusion: These attributes were the crucial source of experiencing physical, psychological, and social benefits, which then lead to the realization of the aspired values.
