Effect of Fluid Ingestion Protocol on Body Fluid Balance in Elite Soccer Players Trained in Hot Environment

Dehydration level and fluid ingestion can highly affect the physical recovery rate and sport performance of athletes worked in hot environment. The present study was conducted to clarify the rehydration effect of a fluid ingestion protocol on soccer players trained in a hot and humid environment (31.28±1.63℃; relative humidity, 71.00±4.85%). Eighteen elite male soccer players were recruited in this study (21.70±1.20 years-old, 175.70±6.50 cm, 70.00±4.60 kg). The training course included a 20-min warm-up and 90-min soccer training, besides, the strength was set as high as a formal game. According with the training program, a fluid prescription, including tapping water (500 ml, 15℃) and sport drink (1300 ml, 15℃) was conducted. The weight, pulse rate (n=4), and urine discharge amount are monitored, and the form for the feelings of stomach and intestines is filled at once. The results are: the subjects do not discharge the urine and the pulse rate is 152±12 bpm during training; 0.98±0.42 kg (0.34-1.68 kg) of weight is reduced after training; the dehydration is 1.40±0.62% (0.50-2.49%); the sweat amount is 2.78±0.421l (2.14-3.481); the sweat rate is 1.39±0.21l/h (1.07-1.74l/h); and no uncomfortable stomach and intestines is reported after training. In summary, the proposed fluid ingestion protocol can protect soccer players trained in hot environment from severe dehydration.
