摘要

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences of interactive elements used by the dentist between cooperative and uncooperative patients during dental treatment. Methods: One hundred and twelve children aged 15 to 111 months were included in the present study. The selected patients for this study were treated in De Wei clinic, Taipei from June 2000 to May 2002. The patient's behavior in the operatory was videotaped during dental treatment. Rating the videotaped behavior was accomplished using modified Wu's Behavior Rating System by four raters. Twelve interactive elements between dentist and patients were recorded and analyzed in the same time-scaled chart. The collected data were analyzed using independent samples t-test and chi-square tests. Results: Patient's behavior was found no relationship with gender (p<0.05). Uncooperative behaviors tended to be more frequent in younger children (age<3) (p<0.001). Among those interactive elements, the dentist used ”demonstrating dental instruments” (p<0.05), ”making the rules”, ”positive reinforcement” and ”aversive condition” more frequently in patients with uncooperative behaviors (p<0.01). The dentist used ”giving instruction” and ”apologize” more frequently in patients with cooperative behaviors (p<0.01). Conclusions: The present investigation suggests that there is significant variability in interactive elements between dentist and cooperative patients and uncooperative patients. The result of this study provides some directions for the dentist conducting future related research.
