There is a diversity of natural and cultural landscapes in Taiwan, and interpreting the significance of landscapes in Taiwan literature helps people to recall memories of Taiwanese culture. Taiwanese ballads as cultural assests include various themes, contain multi-level cultural meaning, and represent Taiwanese landscapes in a literary form. The landscapes in the texts of Taiwanese ballads imply spatial awareness or the relationship between modern culture and knowledge construction, and reveal authors’ perspectives and the sense of places. From the views of Taiwanese ballads’ space-time codes and the connection between landscapes in texts and culture, this paper chose Taiwanese ballads as a research topic explaining their cultural connotations. First, the paper reviewed the space shift of traveling around Taiwan and historical perspectives of watching the landscapes in Taiwanese ballads, and second it discussed the connection between ballads, material culture, community culture, and expressive culture from the aspects of reflecting the features of material culture, publicizing the functions of ethics and institutions, and the artistic expression in literature.
