This paper discusses how we can make use of hie-sheng, rime groups, and tone classes in any study of Archaic Chinese, as well as the concept of sound change, as based on Duan Yucai's liushu yinyun biao <六書音韻表>. Duan's work has made a great influence in the study of Archaic Chinese phonology in the past hundred years. In addition, it is suggested in this paper that an intermediate stage, pre-Chinese, be set up between Proto-Sino-Tibetan and Archaic Chinese.
