A Study of the Status Quo and Constraints in the Participation in Recreational Sports by the Faculty and Staff Members of St. John's & St. Mary's Institute of Technology

The purpose of this study was to explore the differences between the status quo and the constraints in the participation in recreational sports by the faculty and staff members of St. John's & St. Mary's Institute of Technology. The results of this study will be submitted to the related policymaking administrative offices for reference in future benefit plan-making for the faculty and staff members of the Institute. A questionnaire titled ”A Survey of the Status Quo and the Constraint Factors in the Participation in Recreational Sports by the Faculty and Staff Members of St. John's & St. Mary's Institute of Technology” was distributed as the means of data-collection. Of the 260 questionnaires distributed, 202 were retrieved as effective. For the purpose of the study and to prove the hypotheses, a process using descriptive statistics, cross-analysis, Chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe's comparison was used, producing the following conclusions:1.Among the faculty and staff members, 36.7% ”regularly participate” in recreational sports, and 34.1% ”do not have the habit” of participating in recreational sports.2.The most common frequency of participation in recreational sports is ”once every week”(33.8%), with a duration of ”one hour or less”(55.6%). There is no significant difference between ”holidays” and ”workdays.” Most of them do the activities ”in the afternoon.” Most of them do the activities ”alone,” followed by ”with family members” and ”with colleagues.”3. The most popular sports are for ”health-building,” including jogging, swimming, bicycling, and hiking, followed by ”competitive sports,” such as badminton, tennis, basketball, and table tennis. Most choose ”the school” as the place of the sports.4.Most of the participants in the activities have the tendency of needing technical instructions, such as skills, injury prevention, and competition rules.5.There are significant differences in the frequencies and durations in the participation of the activities among the participants of different backgrounds.6.Among the constraint factors, ”work factor” constitutes the greatest constraint, followed by ”facility factor.”7.There are significant differences in the participation of recreational sports among faculty and staff members of different sexes, administrative status, educational backgrounds, positions, and marital status.
