The knowledge of the belt's temperature distribution is of fundamental importance in industrial applications that demand a high efficiency at power limit. Due to the operating mode of a non-positive belt drive, temperature in connection with material behavior is a main parameter to secure the expected life time of this type of transmissions. This is of importance as heating of is not yet considered in the designing process by the belt's manufacturer. Aim of the investigation is a prediction of the belt temperature distribution under known operational conditions using simple procedures. Therefore, a simplified analytical model is introduced where a few known parameters are needed to predict the temperature distribution in the belt approximately. The investigation therefore considers the main influencing operational parameters speed, torque and pre-load and the thermal material behavior of the belt used.
