Healing of Memories in Ecumenical Horizon

The influence that Protestantism had over German society up until the 19th century is difficult for the modern world to understand. During that time, almost all the educated elites were Protestants, and almost all national leaders endorsed anticatholic teachings. The so-called Kultur-kampf in the late 19th century entailed suppression of Roman Catholic doctrines and the elimination of anything related to Roman Catholic doctrines from public life. A shift occurred with the emergence of the "healing of memories," which happened when German protestant churches were preparing for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. The popularly used term "celebration of reform" was changed to "remembrance of reform." During the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, Catholic churches partnered with Protestant Churches to prepare for the celebrations. In the same year, a reconciliation service for Catholics and Protestants was held at Hildesheim in north Germany. The purpose of this service was to provide a chance for the churches to immerse themselves in the relevant history as well as to consciously emphasize that they had all originated from and were inseparably connected with this history. Through a jointly organized repentance service, both Catholics and Protestants could organize celebratory events for commemorating the Reformation. In addition, both parties were not only able to express the suffering they had experienced in the past, but also their joy of gospel.
