Through Karl Gützlaff 's Christian fiction, using the joint perspectives of history, reality, as well as the future, he conceived the future path of the indigenization of Chinese Christianity, especially what it would be like under Chinese Christian leadership, where Chinese Christians would constitute the main body of faith and take the lead in evangelism and church management (that is, be "self-propagating" and "self-governing"). In Gützlaff's conception, as well as in his fiction, Chinese Christian faith would concentrate on 2 aspects, namely the Bible as its center, and on spiritual renewal; its leadership was to be increasingly diverse, as more people from lower class backgrounds converted; and, in terms of theology, the basis for Christian conversion should come from a direct connection between God and the Chinese people, without the assistance or intervention of missionaries. When an individual began to ponder and reflect on ultimate concerns, he or she would be led by this reflection to a consciousness and a pursuit of God through the work of the Holy Spirit. Gützlaff's conception was radical and prospective in the history of the indigenization of Christianity in China.
