十七世紀西班牙道明會士閔明我對《大學》的譯介與詮釋

The Translation and Interpretation of The Great Learning by Spanish Dominican Fernández de Navarrete in the 17^(th) Century

The Spanish Dominican priest, Fernández de Navarrete, in the 17^(th) century, made a Spanish translation of The Great Learning. He referred to earlier translations of it by the Jesuits. But because of the Chinese Ritual Controversy, his translation did not fully copy that of the Jesuits. He made new interpretations of some of the words in the Great Learning, specifically those that may have been involved in the Ritual Controversy, such as "Ming De", "Zhi Shan", "Tian Zi", "Ren Xing" and so on. In Navarrete's opinion, he considered The Great Learning as an ethical philosophy, and its author, Confucius, as just an atheistic moral philosopher. Navarrete's interpretation can provide us with a new perspective on the opposing viewpoints in the Chinese Ritual Controversy. His reference to early Jesuit translations also gives us a glimpse of the interactions between the Jesuits and the Dominicans. Navarrete's translation of The Great Learning broke through the monopoly of the early Jesuit translations of Confucian texts, and added a new dimension to the Western transmission of early Chinese culture.
