Hong-mao-kang, which was relocated more than ten years ago, was once a large fishing village in Kaohsiung. It was long thought that Hong-mao-kang was a single settlement in the area. However, there existed a forgotten settlement called Sio-he-uan. Located in the northwest corner of Hong-mao-kang area, Sio-he-uan was thus named during the Jiangqing period of Qing dynasty due to its oyster farming and its lime products made of oyster shells. With a superior location and socioeconomic prosperity, Hong-mao-kang held an important position in the area. Sio-he-uan gradually lost the place name competition to Hong-mao-kang, which eventually resulted in the disappearance of its name. As to the origins of the name of Hong-mao-kang, it was said that it took its name in relation to Dutch colonial period, though there was a lack of enough and clear evidence. Promoted from a natural village to an administrative region, Hong-mao-kang had expanded its region to become the only settlement in the area after the disappearance of Sio-he-uan. Hai-shan was not only a place name but also a collective name for many settlements on the sandbank. Hai-shan, Hong-mao-kang, and Sio-he-uan had a place name hierarchy relationship. Hai-shan was in the upper layer, and its lower layer included at least the other two. With the development of the sandbank, Hai-shan's covered region gradually diminishes and overlapped with the Hong-mao-kang area.
