After the amendment of the Emergency Medical Services Act in 2000, ambulances can be operated by private ambulance companies. Currently, private ambulance companies have the second largest number of ambulances in Taiwan. However, these companies are not too well known to the general public. Therefore, this study aims to introduce the development, services, and charges of private ambulances, and further discusses the advantages, disadvantages, challenges and suggested future work of private ambulances. This study revealed that private ambulances offer services that are more diverse than those offered by 119 emergency ambulances; however, private ambulances also face the following problems: insufficient information available to the public about their services, inconveniences with availing the services, the services are not free of charge, and lack of standardization in terms of the quality of ambulance crew. Emergency and non-emergency ambulance services can be well integrated if these problems of private ambulances can be addressed and if the palliative care ambulance service and transportation service for long-term care can be offered generously.
