The Lost and the Hidden: Class Self-Presentation and Personal Property in Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone

Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone has been lauded as the very first detective novel from which classical attributes of modern detective stories have been subsequently derived. The novel is a story of a precious diamond, which the young heiress Rachel Verinder wears to her birthday party, but it disappears from her room on that very night. Strong suspicion of theft inevitably fell upon servants, and the Verinder country house then becomes the main stage where master and servant relations were revealed in its class tension. This paper will delve into how household servants and their social performance are formed in regard to the relations between masters and servants. This paper firstly analyses the role model of house steward, secondly that of house maid, which is influential to the solution to the mystery and lastly, how the servants' self-presentation affects their judgment and interpretation regarding the pivotal material evidence. In such analysis, this paper endeavours to assert the profound influences exerted by servants' self-presentations upon the solution of the mystery and to reinterpret what is concealed behind the space of the country house stage.
