The effects of casing flexibility on the impact dynamics of a rotor/casing system are studied. The rotor model consists of a rigid disc mounted at the free cod of a uniform shaft, which is simply supported at the other end. The casing is modeled by a thin ring. During contact, a linear spring is used to model the contact behavior. Two algorithms for predicting the contact position have been derived. One is suitable for the case where the elastic deformation of the ring is small compared to the initial clearance. The other is more accurate for the case where the elastic deformation of the ring is relatively large compared to the initial clearance.
