The Relation between Yin-yang Theory and Qigong

It is believed in Qigong that the human's ching (essence), chi, and shen (spirit) are the three important treasure residing in the body. In Qigong, Yin-yang theory is not merely a long-standing Chinese philosophic tradition but also a key theoretical foundation for traditional Chinese medicine to establish its belief in the human body's chi system, which is very different from the mainstream Western medicine's belief in energy medicine. Chi, when classified into yin or yang, possesses features of oppositions, interdependence, balances (as yin and yang consume and support each other), and transformation (as they can transform into one another). Such features of chi result in the subtle yet complete changes in the human body's physical and mental systems, which provide the basis for the diagnosis, pathology, and treatment in traditional Chinese medical care and play a key role in chikung practitioners' learning of the body's physical and spiritual changes. Yin-yang theory is actually the guidelines for Qigong health maintenance practices, the movement of chi, the prevention against ailment, resumption of the yin-yang balance, and illness treatment. The yin-yang regimen is based on the principle of ”locating yin and yang and seeking for balance.” Different adjusting measures for the body, the breath, and the mind are taken to achieve the purposes of selecting chi, supplementing chi, expelling chi, and draining chi. When coupled with corresponding diets (cold or hot), the treatment will bring perfect result in enhancing organ functioning, improving breath, resuming yin-yang balance, harmonizing the blood and chi circulation, unclogging veins and arteries, and boosting the function of true chi so that one can keep in good physical and mental health and enjoy longevity.
