The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rountine disinfectant technique of the thermometer immersed in the 1:1000 Zephiran container and used in the ward. The specimens were collected on the day that disinfection procedure was taken and 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after. The results revealed that the rate of contamination of the thermometer after been used by the patients was 25% on the day 3, and 70% on the day 5, if a cotton ball was previously inserted into the container. The contamination rate dropped to 10% on day 3, and 21 % on day 5 if no cotton ball was inserted. Most of bacteria isolated were gram-negative bacilli. Under the same condition, the rate of contamination was decreased 10 6.6% if the thermometer was previously wiped with alcohol sponge.
