Zinc oxide ointment is frequently used in the treatment of skin disorders. Since the preparation was applied on the damaged skin, for decreasing further to injure the skin, the zinc oxide ointment should have suitable physico-chemical properties, good homgoenicity and nonirritation. In this study, we used rheological method, optical examination and assay method to evalute the ointment.During the manufacturing process, the effect of mixing time on the particle size distribution, content uniformity and viscosity of the zinc oxide were measured. The results indicated that the cone-plate viscometer of the rheological method was capable of estimating the homogenicity and particle size distribution of the preparation. The method was easily operated which was simpler than the optical examination and the assay method. In addition, a continuous rheological curve could be obtained from the determination of viscosity which might be applied to other ointment for the evaluation of the quality of product.
