Grip and Pinch Strength after Flexor Tendon Repair

The purpose of this study was to quantify the hand strength of patients with flexor tendon repair and to determine the factors that were relate to the decreased strength of the injured hands. Measurements were taken by a Jamar dynamometer and B & L pinch guage on 50 patients, the hand strength was presented as percentage of the, uninjured hand. The average grip strength of injured hands was about 76.4% of the uninjured hands, and strength of tip pinch was 61.5%. The reduction of grip and tip pinch strength was greater in zone 5 injury and had significant differences when compared to zone 2 injury. The combined nerve injury would adversly affect the strength even further than pure tendon injury. The finger mobility by Buck-Gramcko method and the follow-up interval seemed not to be the factors affecting the grip and tip pinch strength of the hand with flexor tendon repair.
