This paper is a study of the 1989 social movement and the historical origins of neoliberalism in China. The first part of this paper is a historical analysis of the 1989 social movement. Differing from mainstream interpretations on the student's movement in 1989, the author argues that the movement was a social movement which is composed of different social groups in urban areas and explains why those groups, who had different interests and backgrounds, got involved into the movement. The second part of the paper is an analysis about intellectual discussion and debates against the post-1989 context. Focusing on issues such as marketization, privatization, globalization, nationalism and Asia, the author gives us a comprehensive interpretation of the new liberal trend and its critique. The last part is a brief introduction to the meaning of rethinking modernity in Chinese context.
