The main step in the production of liquid fuels and chemicals through gas-to-liquids(GTL) process, the Fischer-Tropsch(F-T) reaction pathway, has been known for over several decades. Initially, the technology was applied for converting coal-based feedstocks into liquid fuels. Over the years, however, the technology has witnessed significant improvements in the production of syngas, in F-T reactor design, and in the product-upgrading technology enabling the use of natural gas feedstocks economically. Therefore, the use of GTL for chemicals and energy production is expected to make a rapid progress in the next few years when stringent environmental legislation is to be enforced. Potential progress in GTL process and its economics will be discussed in this article.
