The Gender Difference Analysis of Qigong Regimen Exercises and Music- Stimulated Intervention on the Cognition, Mood and Sleep Quality in the Elderly

Purpose: This paper was to explore the gender difference analysis of Qigong regimen exercises and music- stimulated intervention on the cognition, mood and sleep quality in the elderly. Methods: 79subjects, who are males elderly and females, aged between sixty and eighty, were recruited and assigned to the male group (M=35) and the female group (F=44). Both M and F group treatment obligatorily included Ping Shuai Gong and fifteen Basic Shiang Gong movements as well as listening to the medical resonance music (MRM) -- the music treatment during day-time being primarily to strengthen the neural function of the temporal lobe ( RRR 126 ), adjust endocrine hormonal activities ( RRR226 ) and strengthen neural cognitive function of the whole brain ( RRR282 ), and during night –time primarily to help achieve relaxation ( RRR931 ), decompression ( RRR 932 ) and whole-brain development ( RRR 280 ). The experimental treatment continuously lasted for six months, with at least 1-3 sessions weekly, each session lasting 30-60 minutes. The impact of the treatment was evaluated and certified by qualified psychologists using the following instruments: the Cognitive Ability Screening Instrument (CASI), the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), , the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index ( PSQI ) to self-assess / report to monitor and assess the cognition, moods and sleep quality conditions of the elderly subjects at three-month interval, lasting for six months. The gender difference analysis on the cognition, mood and sleep states in the elderly subjects. The assessment data were subjected to one-way ANCOVA and one-way ANOVA statistical analysis with the IBM SPSS Statistics Version 21, and with significant difference level set at 0.05. Results: The CASI, ATT、FLU、 ABS、JUD、REA domain scores and PANAS scores reveal significant difference (p<.05); PSQI scores reveal no significant difference (p>.05). Conclusion: This research has found that Qigong regimen exercises and medical resonance music (MRM) intervention reveal gender differences on cognition and mood state in the elderly, but sleep quality demonstrate non-significant difference between genders.
