Annie's Mailbox, a popular advice column syndicated by newspapers around the world, can be used in an ESL reading classroom in Taiwan. By introducing and selecting suitable letters and replies from the columns that might strike a chord with students, a teacher can generate students’ interests, introduce new and up- to- date vocabulary or phrases, and enhance lively class discussion. Students, for their part, might even offer different solutions to the problems posted by the readers. These authentic reading materials can also serve as a source of discussion on cross-cultural issues between different countries. In doing so, advice columns can serve as a useful tool in teaching English as a second foreign language.
