This is the second in a series of articles discussing the acupuncture experience of Zhou Zuo Yu. This primary focus of this article is to study the effects and mechanisms of joining SI 6 to P 5, and to use this understanding to expand upon its clinical application. Needling through SI 6 to P 5 was used by Dr. Zhou to treat acute lumbar strain. After analyzing the primary indications of these points from the perspective of their location and names, I concluded that SI 6 has the ability to invigorate the channels and open the collaterals, and can treat problems in the limbs, head, neck, lumbar and back, as well as degenerative diseases and eye disorders. It is particularly effective in treating problems that inhibit the ability to rotate the waist. Needling P 5 moves qi and invigorates blood, and is effective in treating illnesses located on the midline of the anterior and posterior of the body, as well as diseases of the blood vessels and psychological illnesses. It is especially effective for treating inhibited anterior and posterior motion of the head or torso. Needling these two points together increases the effects of moving qi, invigorating blood, opening the collaterals and relieving pain, thus expanding there ability to treat various disorders due to qi stagnation and blood stasis. Including pain in the limbs and torso, diseases of the zang and fu organs, eye diseases as well as mental imbalances.
