The parent-child relationship refers to the relationship between parents and child, in which maternal-infant bonding is the mother's emotional connection to her fetus. It begins from fetal movement and occurs within one year of the child's birth. In contrast, maternal-infant attachment is defined as the infant's attachment to its caregiver. Although the two terms describe the same maternal-infant relationship, they have very different theoretical concepts and application. Literature from other countries has clarified the difference between bonding and attachment, but the two concepts are still misused in the field of domestic nursing and midwifery which has causes academic research to fail to exhibit their different characteristics. This article use the concept analysis steps outlined by Walker and Avant to define maternal-infant bonding and makes a distinction between the concepts of bonding and attachment.
