Sonological Evaluation of the Liver, Spleen and the Kineys in an Adult Southern Nigerian Population

並列摘要

The objective of this study was to determine the normal range of dimensions for the liver, spleen and kidneys and see how they correlate with some physical parameters in healthy adult Nigerians. A total of 723 Ijaw (Southern Nigerian) students of the University of Port Harcourt (363 males and 360 females) ages ranging from 18 to 40 years were utilized for the study. The liver, spleen and the kidneys were scanned and measurements taken, the corresponding age, weight, height and body mass index of each subject were also noted. The mean liver length was 13.13±1.09cm; spleen length was 9.23±1.53cm. The mean bipolar length and transverse diameter of the left kidney was 10.31±1.10cm and 5.04±0.63cm respectively, while the bipolar length and transverse diameter of the right kidney was 10.02±0.97cm and 5.12±0.68cm respectively. There was significant difference in organ dimensions with respect to sex (p<0.05). The organs dimensions however showed weak correlations with age, sex, weight, length and body mass index.
