The three elements of a fire (ignition source, fuel, and oxidizer) are abundant in any operating room. Operating room fires are a risk for patient safety. They can be prevented by education and training of operating room members on how to prevent and manage fires in this setting. We report a patient with ileus who suffered a second degree flame burn caused by ignition of alcohol-based solutions while receiving urgent exploratory laparotomy. The strategies to reduce the fire risk include: avoiding pooling of alcohol-based solutions by using the minimum amounts necessary, ensuring the solutions dry completely before draping, and minimizing the use of alcohol- based solutions.
