Objectives. To investigate the effects of low-intensity elastic resistance training on the functional fitness, blood glucose level, and blood lipid levels of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods. A quasi-experimental design was used, and 40 patients were recruited. Patients in an elastic resistance training group were instructed by a professional fitness trainer twice a week for one hour each over twelve weeks (n=17). The control group (n=23) received no training interventions. Results. With regard to functional fitness, except for grip strength, the patients in the experimental group showed significant improvements in flexibility, lower limb muscle strength, muscle endurance, agility, and dynamic balance over the control group (all p<0.05). The experimental group also showed significant decreases in body mass index (BMI) and insulin resistance (p = 0.002, p = 0.01, respectively). A post hoc analysis found that dietary intake and medication use did not differ between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion. Short-term low-intensity elastic resistance training can improve the functional fitness, BMI, and insulin resistance of patients with type 2 diabetes.
