The First Description of Elaphe frenata Gray, 1853 (Colubridae; Squamata) from Taiwan

摘要

In 2000,a fresh Elaphe frenata roadkill was found in Beinan District （卑南鄉）, Taitung County （臺東縣）. Two years later, one live individual and another roadkill were collected from Chochi District （卓溪鄉）, Hualien County （花蓮鄉）. Since 1996, this species has been recorded and reported in four localities in Taiwan, but no morphological descriptions were provided. By reviewing the worldwide distribution of E. frenata, it appears that the only island population occurs within Taiwan. In this paper, we describe the scalation, coloration, hemipenis, and measurements of E. frenata of Taiwan.
