Sialoendoscopy for Sialolithiasis According to the Size of the Calculi: Literature Review

摘要

Background: Obstructive salivary gland disease is one of chronic sialadenitis, and may lead to the compromise of the airway, resulting in more serious disorders. The size of the calculi reported for sialolithiasis would require procedures such as sialoendoscopy, extra-corporeal shock wave, Holmium: YAG laser, pneumatic lithotripsy, and sialadenectomy. Various factors and conditions influence the procedure performed. Therefore, we reviewed the procedures and indications for sialolithiasis. Methods: Literatures review. Results: The appropriate procedure for sialolithiasis is based on the size, location, and shape of the calculi. The anatomy of the salivary gland duct is also important in determining the procedure. Sialoendoscopy for sialolithiasis is a primary choice in procedure but the question of which conditions and symptoms are indicated still remains. Contraindications and indications are mentioned so that a complete review of the procedure can be considered. Conclusions: Throughout our study, relevant literature reviews are used to reach a conclusion on sialoendoscopy for sialolithiasis.
