The Dead Sea Scrolls & New Understanding of the Bible

The Dead Sea Scrolls are the most important discovery of ancient texts in the 20th century, with repercussions for our understanding of early Judaism, the birth of Christianity as well as the Old and New Testament. The article provides an overview of the settlement at Qumran and its inhabitants Qumran community, the different genres of the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as the stages of the transmission and the canonization of the Hebrew Bible based on the Dead Sea Scrolls. In addition, the Dead Sea Scrolls teach us a lot about understanding of the New Testament and the early Jesus movement. There are many parallels between the religious belief of the Jesus group and that of the Qumran community-taking themselves as an elite part of the larger Essene movement, and a scribal center in Qumran, the expectations for a future messiah and for the messianic age.
