Plastic and E-Waste in the Anthropocene: The Man with The Compound Eyes and Waste Tide

This thesis is about the representation of the negative environmental impacts of advances in science and technology in two climate-fiction (cli-fi) novels: The Man with The Compound Eyes by Wu Ming-yi and Waste Tide by Chen Qiufan. I discuss how these novels portray two kinds of negative environmental impacts of science and technology as well as how the novels draw attention to the high value that governments place on scientific and technological development and the low value that they place on the environment. At present, there is a great divide between environmental protection and scientific and technological progress. This divide relates to why the current age is being called the Anthropocene. Such an overview will include such concepts as planetary boundaries, or the limits that humans might agree on to ensure a functional Earth system. For example, humans in the future might agree to setting aside larger areas of the planet for non-agricultural and non-industrial use, and humans in the future might be more willing to support and elect government leaders who are more successful in providing effective incentives for caring for these areas. Such agreement will have been the result of work being done today. It includes undertakings by artists as well as by scientists. Wu Mingyi and Chen Qiufan’s novels represent the work of two artists—writers—who are contributing to raising awareness about the Anthropocene, and the novels focus on two major manifestations of it: plastic waste and e-waste.
